BEFORE THE SWEETARTS -
THE FABULOUS CHEVELLES

chevelles 1963The Fabulous Chevelles was an Austin, Texas three-piece dance band that worked the fraternity and private party circuit in Texas in the early 1960s. Specializing in the Top Forty rock of the period, the Chevelles carved a sizeable niche in the lore of the University of Texas fraternity scene.

Original members Charlie Hatchett (guitar and vocals), Dwight Dow (drums and vocals) and Ernie Gammage (lead vocals and bass),turned the Austin music scene on it's ear as they rode the crest of the wave of new popular music that appeared in the early 1960s. The Beatles and the rest of the British Invasion, Bob Dylan, James Brown, Otis Redding, and the new R'n'B coming out of New Orleans, Philadelphia and Detroit fueled a dance machine that was always on top of the latest releases. Working in a trio format allowed the band to gin out original tunes, most written by Gammage, at an astounding rate.

Begun in the fall of 1963, the Chevelles continued with its original members until 1965 when departing members Gammage and Dow began the Sweetarts. Replacement musicians kept the band alive until the mid-70s.
